DJ A-Trak is the most accomplished battle DJ ever having won every battle going both solo and as a team alongside DJ Craze. On the first occasion that he came to play while Indelible was still at The Key club I arranged an instore performance for him at Deal Real alongside John Legend. It was at this that he first met Kanye West, a meeting which has led to him taking on the enviable task of traveling the world as Kanye’s DJ! He will do doubt soon be sporting a Roc-A-Fella chain!

My first love is hip-hop, im one of the few djs who rocks clubs, radio, mixtapes as well as spining for a mc. If i can get away with it I drop as many different types of music as I can from funk to hip-hop to 80s grooves to reggae.

who or what are you inspirations?

family, my girl, friends, god, jazzy jeff, cash money, russel simmons,

What do you think is the most important aspect of rocking a crowd?
Theres a few main things you've gotta take into consideration. First of all you have to be on top of your game. That means you have to have EVERYTHING from the brand new shit that no one has, as well as old skool shit, as well as the current shit. You have to read the crowd. No one wants to hear a DJ playing his favorite tunes all night. If you don’t play what people want the people won’t turn up. Saying that you have to educate people to music and show em that there’s more to hip-hop then dressing in a g-unit top and listening to Emenem

DJ Papercuts first came into my psyche when I read a review of a mixtape of his. He then got in touch with me looking for work, sent me a mix and mailed me at least twice a month to hassle me. North London, along the picturesque Holloway Road

where would you most like to live?
Visited Melbourne in Oz last year and I could have stayed.. Otherwise, although I have never been, I reckon I would enjoy living in Miami or New York.

what is your first musical memory?
The first memory of me being involved in music (despite the obligatory recorder lessons at primary school) was trying to start a band at the age of 9. We had all the dreams and ideas in the world and no ability. We broke up due to musical differences after 6 hours!

what was 1st record you ever bought?

Rather regrettably, 7” of Bros – I Quit!! But my second one was Soul II Soul – Back to Life.

what was your 1st dj gig?
First got decks at about 18 so did a lot of friends b’days. But my first “professional” gig was at the Dragon Bar in Shorditch. I love playing there so much I still spin regularly

most enjoyable gig?
I played a one off set at the Mother Bar in Shorditch from 10pm – 4am on a Sunday. I thought it would be dead but the place went off. They were loving everything I spun so I got to play a very eclectic set cutting Hip-Hop and soul with the likes of The Prodigy, Groove Armada, and even Nine Inch Nails! It was shoulder room only till 4am.

how do you describe your musical style?
I try to play to the crowd as much as possible but I do have a tendency to try and mix it up a bit by dropping a track they would never expect to come next such as following ODB ‘got your money’ with INXS ‘Need you tonight’ and I have been known to drop Rage Against the Machines ‘Killing in the Name’ after it as well. I love cutting Hip-Hop with some random 80’s/soul/pop track it just lends itself to sampling.

who or what are you inspirations?
DJ wise it has to go to dj Prime Cuts of Scratch perverts fame, and also dj Woody but I was a big indie kid in my youth following pearl jam, Rage, nirvana etc and this music still has a place in my heart.

What do you think is the most important aspect of rocking a crowd?
Its got to be down to track selection. You don’t need to be a technical geek to be a good dj but it can help. Oh, and as a dj, looking like you are loving your own music gives something for the crowd to respond to.

outside of music how do you pass the time?

Outside of music?!? Believe it or not it is cooking. I love cooking in my days off and can spend a whole day preparing one meal for the evening!

If you were not making a living from music what do you think you would be doing?
See above…a chef I think and definitely to own a hotel would be a dream

what is you favorite drink?

First choice goes to JD and Coke but you cant beat an old fashioned pint on a summer day.

can you recommend a hangover cure?

Yes: Pint of water, alka seltzer, Boots own blackcurrant re-hydration salt sachets, topped up with Ribena for taste. Works every time!!

Anyone you would like to big up?
Yeah, a big thanx has got to go to Ben O’Brien who has been designing my CD covers, website, promotional flyers etc for me from the beginning for the small payment of a couple of pints – thanx dude, I owe you. And to all those during my university years who had to put up with me learning how to scratch and sounding like ‘strangling a cat’ it’s about time it paid off – thanx for your patience!

Rob Swift

DJ Rob Swift is probably best known as one of the phenomenal battle crew the X-men/X-ecutioners. The list of people he has worked with is a testament to his ability to use the turntable as an instrument! I have had the pleasure of spending time with Rob when he came to spin @ The Indelible Marker (link to page) and he is genuinely one of the most mellow respectful people I Have met in this game.
